Chain Reaction Layout Revision
After talking on Monday with Micheal, I made some revisions to my layout. I kept the 3 column grid that I began with.
My first attempts:
...and my second:
After these failures, I decided to go back to the drawing board. Micheal suggested that I include more imagery.
I decided that the whole layout lacked style, and looked very bland and boring, so I decided to fix it...
I found some images that went with the theme of the article and my icons and printed them out and completely trashed them. I crumpled them, splattered them with ink, sprayed them with spray paint and used sandpaper on them. I then scanned them back into photoshop and made further adjustments.
Here is my latest attempt. There were some issues with widows and a few other issues I noticed after the export which were not there before it:

Diagram Iterations
Ok, I addressed the arrows first. I decided to make them 30% gray and set them behind the green circles. (before they were floating outside). I also made the circles bigger. I changed the orientation from portrait to landscape, and tried a few different things with the lines that connect some of the topics. I also made a few minor adjustments such as scaling the images down to match the icons and played around with the title.
Here is the one I like the best
I went back to the dotted lines on this one, although there are still a few issues to be resolved if I chose this direction with the lines.
Here I played around with the positioning of the title (still thinking of a way to involve winning & losing...)
Here is a detail of the lines connecting the information

Brockmann Poster Iterations
Although my layout is pretty much finalized, after talking with Micheal I am considering some changes to the color of the shapes. (lessening the boldness of the colors create less competition between the shapes and the type and to make the type pop more.)
4 Sports Book Covers
Here are my final book covers for Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Soccer. These will be printed and assembled this weekend.
For each of the covers I used a close up photo showing the texture of the sports ball, a diagram of the field the sport is played on, the scoreboard associated with the sport, and a silhouette of a person playing the sport.
Using Photoshop, I merged the images together changing the opacity, or layer blending modes. I made the covers tri-tone, using the game balls as inspiration.

Diagram Iterations
Here are a few of the iterations I did for the Chain Reaction diagram.
This was the first. This is really a lot like my final Paper Prototype.
For this one, I tried to make it like a poker table and the groups were all players in the game.
For this one I tried to take a linear approach starting with Technical because everything begins with playing poker.
For this one I was thinking of a trickle down effect and put economy and health at the bottom.

Josef Muller-Brockmann Directions
Here are some of the possible directions for the poster. Brockmann was known for his simple designs and clean use of typography which is what I am trying to utilize for the poster.
These are refinements of the three directions I thought were the best.
